Facebook: Students leave
By Shalini Singh

While Facebook is the hottest social networking website in the world, its domination is not absolute.  Google’s Orkut was the first to move into India and Brazil and has a commanding lead in both these countries. Even as Facebook is quickly catching up in India and Brazil, it is losing many young men and women in USA.

Facebook has more than 230 million members and growing by the hour. But it seems that if the oldies (parents and grand parents) start logging on to Facebook, school and college kids start to drop out.  After all, youngsters want a place to hang around and have fun without parental authority breathing down their neck. And no mami Sudha asking to be your friend. Or chacha Ramu poking you or seeing your relationship status.

Readwriteweb has scooped the story

How fickle are kids these days? Just when all the grown ups started figuring out Facebook, college and high school users have declined in absolute number by 20% and 15% respectively in a mere six months, according to estimates Facebook provides to advertisers that were archived for tracking by an outside firm. Facebook users aged 55 and over have skyrocketed from under 1 million to nearly six million in the same time period. There are more Facebook users over 55 years old today than there are high school students using the site.

While the above figures are from USA, this will happen in India as well.  You only have to walk to the local parks in Pune (and elsewhere) to see students prefer public places where/when ‘oldies’ are not around.
