HCL Best employer? By Techgirl
CyberMedia is the largest specialty media house in South Asia and amongst India's top five magazine publishers. Its stable includes such respected magazines like Dataquest, PCQuest and DQ Week. The group has 12 websites led by www.ciol.com.
Needless to say that CyberMedia is one of the most powerful voices in tech India. Managers get huge promotions and salary increases based on one positive article in Dataquest.
But even the powerful Dataquest cannot get many Indian tech companies to participate in a contest to be labeled the ‘Best IT Employer’
So, who do you think would Dataquest (in association with IDC) rate as the best IT employer in India? Google? IBM? Infosys? Wipro? HP?
The answer is none of the above. HCL Infosystems is the best IT Employer in India. According to the powerful CyberMedia survey
“ While HCL Infosystems emerged the topper in the list of top 20 IT employers in India, last year's topper iGate Global Solutions came second this time. Interestingly there are seven new entrants this year in the top 20 list.
The other companies in the top 20 list are: Rolta India, RMSI, SAS Institute India, R Systems (new), Perot Systems (New), Tavant Technologies, Datacraft India, Synechron, Ingram Micro India, (new), Tulip Telecom, Sify Technologies (new), SPAN Infotech India, Hexaware Technologies, Patni Computer Systems, Infogain India (new), Unisys India (new), Novell (new) and Virtusa. “
In case you are wondering what happened to Google which is considered the best company to work for in USA and most of Europe, the answer is that many foreign and Indian IT companies chose to not participate in this competition. A number of heavyweights like Microsoft, TCS, Intel and Sun did not participate in this survey. And where was Infosys was is arguably the most respected IT Brand in India?
While HCL is a great company, even its own managers would not really believe that they are the ‘best’ employer in India.
CyberMedia insiders tell me that when the survey was first started a few years ago, most technology companies were happy to participate. It was like a beauty contest with every tech company trying to show her best side. The lobbying was equally intense. The problems started when companies started to miss out from the winners list or were downgraded. They threw a fit and never came back. The next set of ‘non-participants’ have better ‘media relationships’ with competing newspapers and magazines. Many cashed up tech companies feel they do not need the affirmation of any such award. The claims of a few tech companies would not stand the due diligence of any respected media organization. And the reasons go on and on. Despite being one country, there are many things that divide us. Any survey and election can be complicated in our country. Heck, in the last elections even the Congress was not sure whether they would win or lose.
