SMS about Suicide bomber By Techgirl
Respected blog ProPakistani.Pk which reports on Pakistan’s telecom and tech Industry says it gets 250 thousand unique visitors per month. What is particularly attractive about this ProPakistani blog is that it writes it as it sees it. No half baked politically correct soft statements. I am a regular reader of this excellent Pakistani tech blog.
Like all mobile phone users in Mumbai (and the rest of India) I get mildly irritated when I receive unsolicited cold calls and SMSes selling everything from credit cards to right wing politicians contesting the recent Maharashtra Assembly elections. Many of my girlfriends who are single dread the over friendly SMSes from some men asking them out.
But such unwanted SMSes could be worse. Apparently, in some Pakistani border regions, panicky locals are shooting off SMSes warning of an impending suicide attacker. Naturally, most of these SMSes are not based on any fact, but rather on fear, uncertainty and rumour. Possibly a few silly pranksters as well.
ProPakistani.pk is reporting
“ Owing to growing uncertainty and excessive use of Short Message Services (SMS) of the mobile phone for spreading hoaxes have further added to the worries of People in Pakistan’s, especially in North West Frontier Province, which has started to affect daily routines.
People getting warnings and alerts on “expected” suicide bombings and sending them forward to their friends and relatives without verification are spreading fear and panic.
It is strictly advised to not to forward any rumor message without verification, as it will only add the pain but no resolution for the situation. “
Somehow, now the SMS selling me a credit card seems harmless enough.
