By Rahul Kumar

A speeding bus has seriously affected the life and wellbeing of IBM executive Gaurav Singh and his wife Ritu, who were married in November, 2008.  The happily married couple could not celebrate their first Diwali as Ritu is battling for her life in a private hospital in Gurgaon for the last 19 days.  On October 10, a state transport bus had hit their motorbike on MG Road leaving Ritu seriously injured while Gaurav sustained mild injuries.

The onlookers had chased down the fleeing bus driver and handed him over to the police. Ironically, the driver was released on bail the very next day. The police booked him on the simple charges of negligent driving and hurting someone. They have also impounded the vehicle.

According to the doctors attending to Ritu in Artemis Hospital, she suffered seven fractures in her ribs and two fractures in pelvis as well. Her liver has also been damaged. With injuries in all her chest and abdomen region, she was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and remained in the intensive care unit (ICU) for about a week initially. The doctors said that though she was out of danger now but she would not be able to stand up for the next 3-4 weeks. After this also, she would have to use support to walk for another month and so.

According to Gaurav, the incident happened at 12.30 afternoon on October 10 when a speeding bus hit his Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle from behind. He had had been returning home after a shopping session with his charming wife Ritu.   As the bus hit the bike at just behind the gates of Kalyani Hospital on MG Road, both of them fell on the ground. Gaurav suffered a number of mild injuries all over his body but Ritu fell unconscious as she had suffered grievous injuries. Somehow, Gaurav managed to admit her in the Kalyani Hospital where the doctors referred her to Artemis Hospital.   The couple was expected to reach their native town in Allahabad on Diwali and celebrate the festival. Gaurav’s father RK Singh has rushed to Gurgaon to take care of his son and daughter-in-law leaving behind his elderly bed-ridden parents.
