Twitter India stats
By Shalini Singh

Twitter is the hottest micro blogging platform in the world and growing rapidly by the day. Even though more than 50 million people have signed up, only about 20 million are active on Twitter.

Twitter has a very high profile in India. Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor tweets.  So does Bollywood super start Shah Rukh Khan. Popular writers like Chetan Bhagat are on Twitter. The Indian national media mentions Twitter at least a few times every day.

But how does India stack up against the rest of the world? Sysomos, which specializes in monitoring social media, has just released a report which says that nearly two-thirds of unique users (62.1%) were located in the U.S., while the U.K. and Canada were a distant second and third.

Brazilians love Twitter and now make up about 8.8 percent of all unique Twitter users followed by UK, Canada and Germany. Indonesia takes sixth place and accounts for 2.4 percent of active users on Twitter.

Even though India has a substantial mobile phone base and probably as many as 60 million people using the internet,  we are only 1.27 percent of all the active Twitter users.
