Wikipedia wants better NASSCOM profile By Bala Shah
Wikipedia is one of the top 20 websites accessed by Indians. Apart from being a rich source of research and educational material, it can be credited as one of the greatest achievements of idealistic, global volunteer effort. Started in 2001, it is widely regarded as a reliable source of news, research and information. Now Wikipedia wants a factual NASSCOM entry.
So why is Wikipedia which has about 3 million articles, 10 million registered users and 1,671 administrators unimpressed with the NASSCOM profile on its website?
NASSCOM is the official body that represents India’s booming IT, BPO and KPO sectors. Its Board consists of many of the most respected men and women in these verticals. By all accounts, it does a good job lobbying Indian and foreign Governments to ensure the continued success of the local IT/BPO companies. This year its members will earn revenue of approximately $50 billion. NASSCOM is a cozy club and you have to be working for one of the top IT and BPO companies to get a position.
But it seems that NASSCOM has not bothered to update its Wikipedia entry with interesting facts and figures. And critics of NASSCOM have not bothered to list its flaws on Wikipedia.
Wikipedia, which tries to present a neutral view to the tens of millions of readers who logon everyday, has decided to be proactive and get a balanced perspective on NASSCOM.
The Wikipedia entry for NASSCOM now has this on the top of the page.

Techgoss has checked out the NASSCOM profile in Wikipedia and it is boring. NASSCOM sources told us that it had indeed uploaded most of the article, but somehow no one bothered to update it and make it more interesting. But Wikipedia moves slowly and cautiously. It has been many months since Wikipedia asked for a more balanced NASSCOM profile, but no action has been taken to change or remove it. (7/13/2009) |
