Pak Facebook breaks down
By Sameer

Respected Pakistani blog ProPakistani.Pk which reports on Pakistan’s Telecom and IT Industry gets 250 thousand unique visitors per month. It is one of the most read tech blogs in the country.

ProPakistani is reporting how a bug in Pakistan’s national Telecom PTCL has resulted in thousands of Pakistani’s being able to log into each other’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.  This puts all personal data, messages and video at risk.

This problem is restricted to Pakistan and because of some security flaw in the Government’s telecom network.

Twitter and Facebook users, apparently in Pakistan only and those too on PTCL only, were able to log-in to random accounts with complete access and control over others’ Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Problem was identified with web interfaces (and not the APIs) as those who tried to log on with their username/password were randomly re-directed to other users’ accounts. They could read the messages and have complete control over someone else’s account.

Could such a problem occur in India? Sure! Only reaffirms that fact that never put anything on the internet that you cannot risk being made public.
