It was hard enough to understand the language of love in the real world, and it becomes harder still on the internet. A guy may present himself as Shahrukh and he may turn out to be Shakti Kapoor. A man may look as non threatening to women as Karan Johar but may turn out to be another Shiney.
If I had a Rupee for every time I heard a male and female colleague lying on the internet, I would have enough money to bribe the entire British Government to allow a Vendanta mine right in the heart of London.
While dating in India is still restricted to the bigger cities, once the desi brothers and sisters get to USA, they sign on to dating sites faster than you can saw sati savitri. Or do in Rome as the Romans do.
American dating/marriage website OkCupid has a young, educated and progressive membership. Their membership reflects the modern, multi cultural America with White, Black, Hispanic, Native American and Indian singles who have signed up.
OKCupid has researched more than 500 thousand profiles on their website to see what Indians and other racial groups (Whites, Blacks, Asians, Latinos etc) say and do on their dating site. The main element of their research was all these people's profile essays (280 million words in total!) from which they isolated the words and phrases that made each racial group's essays statistically distinct from the others'. For instance, it turns out that all kinds of people list sushi as one of their favorite foods. But Asians are the only group who also list sashimi; it's a racial outlier. Similarly, black people are 20 times more likely than everyone else to mention soul food, whereas no foods are distinct for white people, unless you count diet coke.
According to OKCupid, Indian men in USA use words like ‘cricket, Hindi, a software engineer, Shantaram, India, Indian food, Bollywood, veg, I’m a simple guy, Mba, every moment, a foodie, Slumdog Millionaire etc, etc’ in their online profiles.
Indian women also use some specific words. Some words shared between Indian men and women’s profiles are ‘Shantaram’ and ‘Slumdog Millionaire’
The good news? According to OKCupid, Indian men and women in America write the best profiles.
