Syntel Meet: IJP issue applause
By Sandhya

Over the last 20 months, Techgoss had published a series of exclusive reports giving details of all that was happening inside the BPO, KPO and IT divisions of one of India’s most successful IT-ITES companies Syntel.  One report showed how that in the past Syntel BPO was overly reliant on couple of key clients. Also, reported were the sudden exits of the CEO and key HR people.

Regular readers of Techgoss are well aware that a large number of our articles are crowd sourced.  People send in tips, photos, story ideas and even articles. Many of our contributors have full times jobs in IT - ITES, and so prefer using a pseudonym. A Tipster wrote in

In February, 2012, Syntel CEO Prashant Ranade held a Town Hall meeting with the employees based in Pune. CEO Ranade briefed the employees about the progress made by the organization in the last few months and said that Syntel is well on its way to achieving its goals of becoming a Billion Dollar Company.

As is the norm in such informal Town Hall format meetings, after the boss’s speech the floor was open for the employees to ask questions and seek clarification on any issue.

As usual, there were many questions on the policies and company facilities. However, one of the questions which grabbed everyone’s attention came from an employee who had spent almost 4-5 years in the organization. He was a Senior Associate and stuck in the same position for a long time.

He started off by saying that he had been stuck in the same position since quite a long time and he has no hopes of getting a promotion in the same process he is working with. Hence he has been applying for Internal Job postings floated by the HR. He had applied for Internal Job postings many times, however each time his application was rejected in the screening phase itself. He was entirely eligible to get an IJP and he fulfilled all the requirements for that job, but in spite of that his application was being rejected. The said employee never ever got even a chance to attend the interview. He went on to ask whether these IJP's are fixed? And if they are why does not the company directly give promotions to whom they want rather than wasting people’s time and career?

The moment the employee finished asking the question there was a thunderous applause in support of him.

The HR head (Syntel KPO), Mr. Arun Paul, spoke to defend the system.  The CEO said that he himself has faced a number of rejections in his career in IJP's and promised that he will personally look into the matter.

The moment the Town Hall ended the HR head and CEO of Syntel KPO, VS Raj, called the employee aside and asked him to provide all the applications which he had submitted for IJP vacancies.

The end result of this is not yet known.

I know Techgoss is read very widely at Syntel.  Can one of your readers update us on what happened to the unnamed employee who had raised the IJP issue which is a sore issue with many?
