Global Indian Foundation legal action against blog
By Techgirl

Singapore-based Global Indian Foundation manages 22 international schools in 8 countries.  In September, 2010, the Global School of Silicon Valley will start operations in USA as well.  Their schools aim to nurture global citizens with an international perspective that builds entrepreneurial skills from the very beginning.

What is a news report about a school doing in Techgoss?  Well, the Global Indian Foundation which runs all the schools has a very strong connection to the Indian power elite including some from our technology sector.

The Global School Board of Patrons includes highly regarded Mr. Murthy who is described in their official site as ‘ Mr. N.R. Narayana Murthy is the Chairman of the Board & Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies Ltd. Mr. Murthy is also the Chairman of the Governing Board of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, a member of the Board of Overseers of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, Cornell University Board of Trustees, and Singapore Management University Board of Trustees.’

The Global School Board of Advisors also includes another equally distinguished Indian who is described as “Mr. Ashok Soota, Member, Advisory Board is an Electrical Engineer with MBA from Asian Institute of Management, Philippines, was President of Wipro Infotech. He Co-founded Mindtree Consulting, in New Jersey, USA, and is a Member of Advisory Council of World Council of Intellectual Property Rights in Geneva.”

A tipster tells Techgoss that Indian tech icons Mr. Murthy, Mr. Soota and others are in the dark about how the Singapore section of this organization has sued a blog run by parents of children studying at their school in Singapore.

Last year,  the blog published the following about the legal threat

To our readers:

This is to inform you that, as of 31 March 2009, a parent who is an editor of this blog/forum has come under legal threat from Global Indian Foundation (GIF) regarding this blog/forum. As such, the future existence and continuation of this blog/forum could be uncertain.

To deal with allegations made by Global Indian Foundation in the lawsuit:

•Further reader comments are now blocked (with immediate effect)
•Reader comments, that were alleged by GIF and Mr. Atul Temurnikar to be defamatory to them, are examined and may be sanitized or removed. (Please refer to already existing rules and a precedent. Deletions will be indicated where possible).

Many India based people associated with this school may also not know that in 2008,  the Global Indian Foundation had sent out a newsletter saying that the highly regarded Indian Minister and super Twitterer Shashi Tharoor had joined its ‘Presidium of Patrons’. When a parent contacted Shashi Tharoor’s office, his Assistant Holly Ellis wrote back saying that her boss had no ‘active role’ in running of  the school and in fact had no contact with the school since his last visit.

Note Shashi Tharoor’s name is no longer on the official website.  Also, it is not clear if Mr. Murthy and Mr. Soota have any role in actively advising the school in any shape or form. Naturally, Mr. Tharoor, Mr. Murthy and Mr. Soota have nothing to do with the Singapore branch sending a legal threat to a blog run by school parents. That decision was taken in Singapore.
