Anonymous votes select 2 Dirty Indian Hotels
By Sandhya

Stephen Kaufer studied Computer Science at Harvard University before embarking on a successful career in Technology.  Stephen then co-founded TripAdvisor in 2000 and the rest is Web 2.0 history. Currently Stephen Kaufer is President and CEO of TripAdvisor which has 15 million registered members and traffic of 36 million a month.

TripAdvisor, like most similar sites, has lists of Top 10 which always go down well with travelers.  There is a list of 10 most popular destinations. 10 most romantic getaways as well as a list of the 10 dirtiest hotels in each continent.  While such lists are popular with readers; the hotels, airlines and travel agents may not agree with what is published in TripAdvisor.

The biggest gripe against TripAdvisor is that it works on anonymous reviews and a business rival needs to generate fewer than 40 complaints for a hotel to be listed in the top 10 Dirty hotels. And everyone knows how easy it is to fake comments on the net.

Which hotels do you think are the dirtiest in India?  If you believe the anonymous reviewers on TripAdvisor, India is home to two of the dirtiest hotels in Asia

So which are the dirtiest hotels in Asia?

Dirtiest Hotels - Asia
(Based on TripAdvisor traveler reviews)

1. Phi Phi Don Chukit Resort, Ko Phi Phi Don, Thailand
2. Raj Residency, Chennai (Madras), India
3. Goldkist Beach Resort, Singapore, Singapore
4. Mahkota Hotel Melaka, Melaka, Malaysia
5. Centaur Hotel, IGI Airport, New Delhi, India
6. Tatami Hampton Hotel, Hong Kong, China
7. Pearl of the Pacific Boracay Resort & Spa, Boracay, Philippines
8. First Hotel Bankok, Bangkok, Thailand
9. Seri Costa Hotel-Resort, Melaka, Malaysia
10. Royal Peacock Hotel, Singapore, Singapore

Any Indian frequent flier will tell you that no one can draw up any credible dirty hotel list based on less than 40 anonymous reviews of any one hotel.  What is surprising is that till today TripAdvisor has not made public its home grown technology which filters out planted negative reviews.  There are no explanatory notes revealing if 500 people votes against Centaur, Delhi or only 15 guests disliked their stay.  All this information is a secret.

Someone will have take TripAdvisor to court to try to understand exactly how they work out these lists.
