Linux 20 years old By Shalini Singh
Linux is one of the most popular operating systems in the world. Apart from being technically clever, it has contributed much to the democratization and openness of the internet.
The Linux Foundation is a nonprofit consortium dedicated to fostering the growth of Linux. Founded in 2007, the LF sponsors the work of Linux creator Linus Torvalds and is supported by leading Linux and open source companies and developers from around the world. The Linux Foundation promotes, protects and standardizes Linux by providing unified resources and services needed for open source to successfully compete with closed platforms
The Linux Foundation has announced its celebrations to mark its 20th anniversary
“ Twenty years ago this summer, Linus Torvalds made a bold decision to share his operating system with the world. Not long after that, he chose to license it under the General Public License. Nothing in computing has been the same since.
In fact, today Linux is the largest collaborative development project in the history of computing, which means that the 20th Anniversary of Linux is an opportunity for the community to come together in celebration of this great success story and in collaboration on how it will define the next 20 years of Linux. “
To mark the occasion, the Linux Foundation has organized a video contest and a number of events. (4/7/2011) |
