India browser breakup: IE6 rules

StatCounter is a free online visitor stats tool that has been in operation for more than a decade and allows its users to monitor the number of hits to their website; the geographical location of visitors; the various pages a visitor views; keywords used to find the site plus other features. StatCounter has just released a report about web browser usage in most countries.

The report is based on an analysis of 15 billion page views and shows that the usage of web browser Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) in the US and Europe fell below the 5% mark for the first time in May, 2010 The firm's research arm StatCounter Global Stats reports that IE6 US usage has fallen to 4.7% from 11.5% 12 months ago.
 
StatCounter Global Stats reports that IE8 US usage increased to 30.5% in May from 8.5% in the same month last year. IE7 is currently at 16.6% in the US.

Asia lags behind the western countries. IE6 still has 20.8% usage in Asia. IE8 has only just overtaken it in Asia. Africa also continues to have high levels of usage of IE6.

What about India?  Techgoss ran the report (See graph above) for India and IE6 is still the most widely used browser in the country.  While Microsoft dominates in India, it is heartening to see Firefox and Chrome also doing well.  Such competition can only be good for every country.
