Site that hunts rioters By Suneetha
The recent riots in U.K. have the wires and the social networking sites buzz with reports and discussions, but a couple of British citizens have a better idea. They have set up zavilia.com where the public can identify the rioters from the images posted online. Techgoss finds out more.
On their website Zavilia, one can identify the rioters in the images on the site by submitting a report online. When a rioter is positively identified by several people, their information will be passed to police by Zavilia. Any information you submit is confidential, and will be used solely to identify rioters. If you have authentic pictures, you are free to upload more images to their Facebook page or contact their admin. In case you dispute a copyright claim for an image, or believe it is wholly innocent, talk to their admin again.
The admin people of Zavilia responded to our questions and here is our dialogue.
Techgoss (TG): What has been the response from the public to Zavilia? Zavilia (Z): The overall response has been hugely positive. A huge amount of people have commented on what a great idea the site is, and what an excellent initiative it is. We have had one or two threatening responses, possibly from rioters themselves, but these are only a drop in the ocean compared to the mainly positive response.
TG: You have said on FB that the website is working well, and you have received several repeat identifications. Have there been any arrests so far on the basis of this? Z: Unfortunately we cannot release this information; however, we are working with the police on the matter.
TG: Can you tell us about Zavilia the name and what it means in this context? Z: The name Zavilia is simply a brand name. It has no meaning as such; much like Apple has no meaning to the electrical manufacturer.
TG: Would you like to identify yourselves? Maybe your names or brief details of your background? Z: We cannot identify ourselves due to the sensitive and confidential nature of our website. We are British, and we are anti-rioters.
Zavilia tells us that they need more visits to their webpage to encourage more people to identify. Zavilia resides at zavilia.com. Their Twitter username is @IdentifyRioters
