HCL deleted emails? By Shalini Singh
On July 11, 2011, in an article for Techgoss, I had reported on how in British Parliament, under privilege, Labour MP Mr. Watson claimed that News Corp had forced its outsourcing partner HCL to destroy incriminating email data in its servers located at Chennai, India.
By July 12, 2011, HCL has released a statement that it ‘did not and has not stored any such data anywhere in the world’ and that they are cooperating with the British police. HCL flatly denied that it stored such emails or that it was asked to delete them.
Something happened between July and September and now HCL is singing a different tune. Guardian has a detailed report which was not been picked up by Indian media
“ The technology company used by News International (NI) to store archived emails said on Wednesday NI had asked it to delete messages on 13 occasions during a 19-month period.
HCL Technologies wrote to the home affairs select committee to update MPs following earlier evidence it submitted in August, in which it said News International had asked it to delete material nine times.
It said it had since identified a further four requests, including one from News International last December asking the HCL to delete messages: "from an inbox of a user who had not accessed his email account for eight years". “
