Pirate Party record win By Bala Shah
The Pirate Party, as its name suggests, was set up to help change the strong laws preventing piracy on the internet. Today, in some countries, the Pirate Party has evolved into a more holistic internet activist role campaigning for the rights of online citizens.
And they have struck a chord with the young people of Germany. Torrentfreak, which only reports on Bittorrent and Copyright, has details of how the Pirate Party will be entering Berlin Parliament after a historic election win which gives them 15 seats in Parliament
“ For the first time in history, a Pirate Party has managed to enter a state parliament. With an estimated 9 percent of the total vote the Pirate Party exceeded the 5% floor needed to enter the Berlin parliament with several seats. For the international Pirate Party movement this is the second major success after the European elections of 2009.
The German Pirate Party has scored a massive win in the elections for the Berlin state parliament today. Two hours after the voting booths closed the first results show the Pirates achieving 9 percent of the counted votes. This translates into 15 parliament seats. “ (9/19/2011) |
