HCL BPO’s Clever Hiring Plan
By Ratna Singh

An agent, Pramod*, couple of days after he was recruited, approached Priya*, a team leader with the Leading HCL BPO (has offices in Chennai and Noida). He wanted to get her approval for 2 days leave since he had to sit for his BBA final year exams. When asked how he was recruited without completing his Graduation, he went on to explain the basis on which he was offered the job.

A pre-requisite in the HCL BPO where Pramod walked in for an interview was that all those who applied had to be a Graduate. It could be in any stream, from any university in the country, but they had to have a Degree to their name. So when he had made up his mind that this is the company he wanted to work in, he decided to give it a shot.

So after the initial screening, he was told to go on to the next rounds. With excitement and surprise he went on and finally at the end of the day discovered that he had in fact been short listed to be offered the role of a Customer Support Executive. During the HR Round he was run through the Offer letter and about the Conditional Offer they would be issuing to him since he was yet to complete his Graduation. The HR executive stated that after a lot of thought and discussions with the Heads of various departments, it was concluded that they would give mileage to those who have just 1 semester left, or who have just taken their exams and are sure they will clear their papers.

A new policy was started whereby a Declaration was obtained from the candidate and then an offer is made to him. The salary fixed will be one slab lesser than what he would be entitled to had he fulfilled the academic qualification required and this will be revised once he completes it. Until such time, he draws a lesser salary but is assured of alteration in the pay-package once certificates are submitted. Their starting pay would be 1.28 lacs and the new employee would be issued with a written commitment of revaluation once the formalities are completed.

At the end of the day, Pramod had secured himself a job even before completing his Degree and he just had 2 more papers to clear after which he would be paid the revised salary
