Cyber Cop of 2011
By Techgirl

On Dec 7, 2011, based on a press release, I had written about how at the 6th NASSCOM – DSCI Annual Information Security Summit, a Cyber Cop prize was awarded. DSCI (which is a NASSCOM initiative) has instituted a national Cyber Cop Award to recognize and honor a police officer who has done the most outstanding investigation in solving a cyber crime. On Dec 6, NASSCOM DSCI awarded Deepak Thakur, Dy. S.P, State Cyber Police, Madhya Pradesh, as the winner of the India Cyber Cop of the Year.

In my article on Dec 7 (republished below) I had asked what was the exact process to become an Indian Cyber Cop of the Year.  I was genuinely curious as this is a unique award.

As luck would have it, Kartik Korpal has emailed us how the Process works:

The Jury composition was widely announced through pre-event press release, during the announcement of the Award at the Summit and also put up on the website of DSCI. To decide the winners, a detailed evaluation process was developed by DSCI, in consultation with Pricewaterhouse Coopers, with eminent experts from the industry and LEAs serving on the Jury panel. The Jury Panel comprised: Mr. Loknath Behera, IGP, National Investigation Agency, Mr. Pratap Reddy, Additional DGP, Karnataka Police, Jerry Rao, Chairman - Value Budget Housing Development Corporate of India Pvt. Ltd. and chairman of NASSCOM Foundation and former chairman & CEO – MphasiS, Dr. Ganesh Natarajan, Vice Chairman  & CEO, Zensar Technologies

DSCI received applications from 26 State Police Departments and other investigating agencies across India highlighting the nature of the cyber cases which they received, and what process was followed to collect the cyber forensics data and prosecute cybercriminals under the appropriate Sections of the IT (Amendment) Act, 2008, IPC etc. Based on the evaluation process, the winner was arrived at.

Separately, Rahul emailed us this link which has even more details.

NASSCOM Cyber Cop
By Techgirl

Yesterday (Dec 6, 2011), Data Security Council of India (DSCI), a NASSCOM initiative, flagged off its 6th NASSCOM – DSCI Annual Information Security Summit at the Hotel Grand. The Summit is one of biggest annual events on data security and witnesses large participation from government, industry, solution providers and user community, from India and abroad. The Summit was inaugurated by Ms. Latha Reddy, Deputy National Security Advisor, Government of India, in the presence of Mr. Rajendra Pawar, Chairman, NASSCOM, Mr. Som Mittal, President, NASSCOM and Dr. Kamlesh Bajaj, CEO, DSCI.

The two-day Security Summit is addressing the current security challenges against the backdrop of the recent high profile attacks. It is a pioneering platform for establishing the significance of security within national and organizational ecosystem where the providers of solutions, users of solutions, and the thought leaders and regulators come together to contribute to the future of data security.

Since Information security has a bearing on the national security as well, DSCI has instituted Cyber Cop Award to recognize and honor a police officer who has done the most outstanding investigation in solving a cyber crime. NASSCOM DSCI awarded Deepak Thakur, Dy. S.P, State Cyber Police, Madhya Pradesh, as the winner of the India Cyber Cop of the Year.

For some reason, NASSCOM’s DSCI’s press release does not give details on who the jury was to select the Cyber Cop Award or which cyber crime was solved.  I for one would like to know how a national Cyber Copy Award is worked out.
