Sweden based Flattr is the world’s first social micro-payment system. It specializes in providing the facility to send small amounts of money - as less as .01 of a Euro. This is ideally suited for companies which want to raise small amounts from a very large number of people.
On Nov 25, 2011, I had written about how Flattr had launched a very innovative program to pay a Blogger (Article republished below). In my view, this is an idea whose time has come. This bright marketing scheme caught the eye of some of the most powerful and well read tech and business blogs in USA and Europe. So, how did the first Pay a Blogger Day Nov 29 go? Andrus Purde of Flattr has the details
“ In terms of donations we don't know how many more donations and purchases we drove that day. Looking at anecdotal evidence it's probably a number in thousands of euros. One blog reported receiving 70 dollars, another one 150 dollars, Jeremy added a donations button just for a day and collected even more, this beer blog got about 10 dollars, and so on. Number of flattr clicks was 10-20% bigger than on previous Tuesdays, but this figure has been known to fluctuate quite a bit. So, in terms of donations this day bought some coffees to a hundreds of bloggers, but (we hope) no one quit their day job just yet.
In terms of Flattr signups Pay a blogger day added some hundreds of users, which is less than I personally expected but it's still a decent number.
So in terms of hard numbers Pay a Blogger was a moderately successful campaign. “
There could be a number of reasons why this scheme had limited success this year. It could be the shaky global economic conditions, or because it is a new idea which will take a couple of years for people to become comfortable with. But there is no reason why it should not be a success in the future.

When you're registered to flattr, you pay a small monthly fee. You set the amount yourself. At the end of the month, that fee is divided between all the things you flattered. You're always logged in to the account. That means that giving someone some flattr-love is just a button away.
Flattr has come up with an innovate idea to promote its service. It has launched a ‘Pay a Blogger Day on Nov 29’
“ Blogs are something that we read almost daily but how often do we step back and think about the time and effort that goes into writing an enjoyable, informative and entertaining post? Day after day, week after week, and keep the enthusiasm that writing brings the author?
Pay a Blogger Day is our effort to put the bloggers in the spotlight to recognize the value they bring to the internet. Not to mention our own daily web “consumption”. Most of the Flattr team members are (or have been) bloggers ourselves so we know what’s involved and on 29th of November we will give a round of applause to our favorite bloggers and get our wallets out to buy them a coffee / beer / that new cool iPhone app :) “ (12/12/2011) |
