UK: $25 computer By Bala Shah
In Oct, 2011, the Indian Government launched the $35 Aakash Tablet which made headlines around the world. The actual price is $50 (Transport, Insurance etc) but the Indian Government will be subsidizing it for students. Whatever its shortcomings, the Aakash is an important achievement.
Today, British charity Raspberry Pi Foundation has commenced production of a $25 computer called Raspberry Pi. According to the official website ‘The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video.’
The Raspberry Model A will cost $25 and the Model B $35.
Today, the company has blogged about how it has finally started the manufacturing process which had to be outsourced to Asia as it was too expensive in UK
“ Raspberry Pis started being made a couple of days ago.
This means that the first units from the first batch will be rolling off the line at the end of January. This first batch will consist only of Model Bs, although you will be able to buy Model As later on. Details about whether we’ll wait for all 10k to come off the line before starting sales, and about what date we’ll be starting on, will come later; so that gives you something else for you to shift around nervously on your chairs about for at least another week or so. “ (1/11/2012) |
