Gates helps teen MCP By Techgirl
While in college and in my early career as a technology journalist, like many others, I saw Microsoft founder Bill Gates as a hard headed businessman who would do anything to earn another Billion dollars. In those days, Microsoft and Bill Gates would do anything to crush any competition. At college in Mumbai, many fellow students started using Linux and Firefox because they hated Microsoft so much.
Over the last few years, Bill Gates became a changed man. He walked away from controlling Microsoft and decided to donate 90 percent of his wealth to charity. Gates has spent tens of millions of dollars in social work in India and now has millions of Indian fans.
One of the most respected tech and telecom blogs in Pakistan, ProPakistani.pk, is reporting on how Bill Gates made the time to personally call the family of a young Pakistani Microsoft Certified Professional to offer all help for her medical treatment
“ Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft, has reportedly approached parents of Arfa Karim, world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), to offer her treatment in United States at the billionaire’s expense.
Arfa Karim became the youngest Microsoft Certified Professional at the age of 9 when she cleared certification exams back in 2004.
Arfa Karim at 16 is suffering from a serious medical condition after a heart attack on December 28, 2011.
Amjad Karim Randhawa, the father of ailing Arfa, while speaking with media men, said that Bill Gates has contacted the family over telephone to express his urge to get Arfa Karim treated in US on his expenditures. “
Pakistan’s media has covered this story extensively. And not surprisingly, many of the online commentators in Pakistan are thanking Bill Gates for making time from his busy schedule to personally call the family to offer help.
I remember a quote by Infosys co-founder and one of India’s most admired men Mr. Murthy: “I work hard like a capitalist, but my heart is that of a communist”.
Today, proprietary software Microsoft creator Bill Gates is displaying the actions of many in the open source, free software world of Linux who are driven by higher things in life.
