Wipro ads used to recruit male engineers
By ITBangbug

Leading English newspapers in Kerala have carried a recruitment advertisement of Wipro this week. ‘Wanted Project Engineers’, Wipro requires Project Engineers across Kerala. There are 25 vacancies but only males can apply. Do we smell some gender bias here? Or is this Wipro’s way of contributing to the gender inequality in Kerala as part of their corporate responsibility?

Remember, Kerala is the state with the highest Female sex ratio in India. (Kerala has 1058 females per 1000 males as per the 2001 census. The advertisement says that the selected candidates will be trained by Wipro but there is a six months bond. The candidates will have to work for a minimum period of six months after the training and an agreement in this regard is mandatory. The ‘Wanted’ ad goes on to mention that salary will be Rs.5000/- per month for the candidate after the successful completion of training. Does this mean they don’t get anything while training? And what happens to those who are not successful?

Graduates and Diploma holders with Software and Hardware knowledge and excellent communication skills can apply. “It’s surprising that a company like Wipro has put an ad like this”, says Manoj, a Tech Support who is looking for a change, “they haven’t mentioned anything about the required experience, so the response will be tremendous”.

The advertisement carries the all familiar Wipro multicolour sunflower logo with the ‘Applying Thought’ caption but somewhere, something seems fishy about this whole thing. Is Wipro just taking advantage of the cheap and skilled manpower available in Kerala? Or is it some fly by night operator trying to cash in on the Wipro brand? With more than 25,000 Engineering Graduates passing out every year from Kerala alone and much more regular Graduates and Diploma holders, this will be an easy game for Wipro or any other company. Techgoss has in the past carried several stories of IT companies exploiting their workforce in Kerala. So this can be just another such story, just that the Wipro name is there this time!
