HCL techie charged with dowry death
By Nitin Paul

A software engineer working for respected IT Company HCL could face a life term in jail for the death of his wife Ranjana. The police have booked the techie and his relatives on charges of dowry death. Aged about 25, the deceased was working as deputy manager with a private sector bank HDFC.

Her body was found hanging from the roof ceiling of her Sector 7 (Extension) house in Gurgaon on Tuesday evening by her husband Parveer Singh after his return from his office. The duo had a tiff on Tuesday morning on the issue of her resumption of her job with the bank, the cops said. The couple had got married in February this year, and Ranjana had just been employed by the HDFC Bank.

The relatives of the deceased claimed that there were visible bruise marks on the forehead of Ranjana and it was evident that her husband had killed her before hanging her on the roof in order to give it the impression of suicide. The relations between the two had strained after Parveer returned from an assignment to Australia recently, and it was after this trip that he allegedly started coercing Ranjana to bring dowry from her poor father who is a refrigerator mechanic.

However, the accused Parveer Singh who works with HCL as software engineer claims he is innocent of all such allegations by her relatives, and that he had seen his wife hanging from the ceiling on his return from his office on Tuesday evening.

Parveer denied the charges that he had killed her. He admitted that he had entered into an altercation with her in the same morning before leaving for the office. He said that she wanted to quit her job and also had taken Tuesday off from her work.

Ramesh Kumar, the uncle of the deceased, on whose complaint the police registered the case of dowry death under various sections of IPC against Parveer Singh and three of his relatives including his parents,  said that Parveer would harass her on regular basis for bringing only Rs. Five lakh as dowry.  The uncle Ramesh claims that the husband was pressuring her to continue her job only for the purpose of augmenting the family finances.

Ramesh claims that Parveer murdered her before hanging her from the ceiling of the house to make it seem like suicide to mislead the police as well as the relatives.

Now a court will decide whether it was murder to suicide.
